The Australian Chinese Daily newspaper and its two complimentary weekend magazines are Australia’s most influential and widely-read Chinese language publications. The Australian Chinese Daily is the first and only daily newspaper to be edited, produced and published
in Australia.

About Us

The Australian Chinese Daily was founded on 19 March 1987 by the entrepreneurial Chinese immigrant Ms Sandra Lau. Her vision then, which remains at the core of the publication today, was to bridge the gap and strengthen links between Australia and China.

The paper has undergone several revolutions in its history. The first edition was read vertically and the paper opened on the left, in traditional Chinese style. It wasn’t until 1990 that, in a pioneer move, the paper became the first Chinese publication in Australia to be formatted in the western style, changing its orientation so that it opened from the right. Soon after, in 1997, colour was introduced in time to report on the Hong Kong handover.

Our independent editorial team covers the latest news from amalgamated Australian sources, as well as China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. This is interpreted to answer the needs of the burgeoning local community with a pertinent mix of politics, sports, entertainment, business and features, together with the two lifestyle magazines, rich with content that highlights culture, commerce, food, fashion, festivals and entertainment.

Our Readers

Almost four percent of the Australian population is of Chinese heritage. Sydney is home to over half the Chinese population, Melbourne has just over a quarter and the other capitals 15 per cent.

The first generation of ethnic refugees and economic migrants came to Australia in the 1980s, as the publication was launching, and have since prospered and integrated as students, employees, families, investors, business owners and heads of major corporations.

Chinese migrants take their culture with them when they travel and instil their history and values into their children who, in turn, enshrine these bonds as they adopt Australia and become valued members of society.

The main ethnic Chinese are from China, Hong Kong, Macau, East Timor, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia and Laos.

Our readers are students, families, employees, employers, business owners, corporations and investors. The one great common denominator is that our audience is eager for news, highly aware and well informed.

The publications are distributed nationally in newsagents and selected retail outlets in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Australian Capital Territory and South Australia.
